Celeste is Everywhere All at Once
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 Film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. It follows a Chinese family, parents Evelyn and Waymond Wang immigrated from China to the United States, where they opened up a laundromat and had a daughter named Joy. Evelyn's father Gong Gong is also present throughout the movie. When another dimensions Waymond makes it known to Evelyn that there are other universes, she is informed that she must help them take down an interdimensional villian who goes by the name Jobu Tupaki, which turns out to be her daughter Joy from another dimension. Although this seems like just another sci-fi action movie, it has romance and some deep emotional topics.
As I am a cat, I have not experienced personally the hardships of financial and familial problems, but boy does this movie have a lot of that. In the household that I reside at, these issues do arise, and from what I've witnessed, being born into an immigrant family is not easy. Parents leave their families behind in order to create a brighter future for their children, trying to make ends meet. The children are expected to be grateful of this sacrifice and in return become successful in this life they were given. In this movie, Evelyn expects a lot from Joy, who according to her mother, has wasted potential. On top of that Joy is lesbian and has a partner who is white named Becky, which in a lot of non-white Immigrant families, it is deeply frowned upon. Evelyn struggles with this fact, and refuses to allow her daughter to come out to Gong Gong (Evelyn's father), this is more deeply rooted in Evelyn's fear of being a disappointment to her father, who did not agree with Evelyn's decision to leave China. What Evelyn fails to see is that she is repeating the same cycle her parents committed by not emotionally supporting their only child.
In the romance aspect, she also sees her husband as a failure due to their failing business. She also sees him as weak due to his optimistic attitude when everything around them feels like it's crumbling down. Through the universes she realizes that her husband is not weak, and that he would have been successful if they weren't together but that in every life he would have traded it all just to be with her. His love for her and their family, his gift of always seeing the good in everyone and every situation, is his superpower, and the answer to defeat Jobu Tupaki. Jobu created the bagel that is basically an endless void, where nothing matters and her goal is to bring a version of her mom who also believes that nothing matters. This connects to Joy's mental state where she is depressed, and just wishes for everything to stop, and for her to have a mother who understands her. I have sobbed and I have laughed in this movie, and it gave me a deeper understanding of the human family that I reside with. I will cherish them more now, and hold onto this life in this universe
